We analyze the forms of hyaluronic acid in cosmetics: high-, low- and ultra-low-molecular, sodium hyaluronate, hydrolyzed and acetylated forms. How they work, what are the differences and how to choose a product with the right type of hyaluronic acid. We explain everything simply - with product examples and a link to the composition analyzer.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural component of the skin responsible for retaining moisture and maintaining elasticity. With age, its amount decreases, which leads to dryness, decreased tone and the appearance of wrinkles. That is why this component is actively used in skin care cosmetics - both in basic products for daily use and in professional formulas for skin restoration after procedures.

This is a form with large molecules that do not penetrate deeply, but create a protective moisturizing film on the surface of the skin. It helps reduce transepidermal water loss and is ideal for dry, sensitive and irritated skin.
Due to its smaller molecule size, it penetrates into the upper layers of the epidermis. This form not only moisturizes, but also stimulates the skin to produce its own hyaluronic acid. It is effective in anti-aging products and recovery after procedures.
The smallest form, capable of penetrating into the deeper layers of the skin. It is used in professional serums and intensive care. Provides a prolonged effect of moisturizing and restoration.
Sodium Hyaluronate is a salt of hyaluronic acid. A more stable form that penetrates the skin more easily and provides long-lasting hydration. It is the one most often used in cosmetics.
Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is a hydrolyzed form, the molecules of which are already broken down and are absorbed by the skin faster.
Acetylated Hyaluronic Acid / Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate is a modified form of hyaluronate that is resistant to destruction, has a prolonged effect and is able to better retain moisture in the skin.
✨ Important to know:
On the packaging, you will most often find not "hyaluronic acid", and its salts - for example, Sodium Hyaluronate. This is not a mistake, but a more effective and stable form, better suited for use in cosmetics.
Position in the composition. If hyaluronic acid is indicated at the beginning of the list of ingredients, this indicates a high concentration. However, even at a low percentage, it can be effective due to its low molecular weight.
Form and type. Combinations of several forms of HA are more effective - for example, high- and low-molecular at the same time.
Accompanying components. It goes well with niacinamide, panthenol, ceramides, plant extracts and vitamins.

After procedures (peelings, microcurrents, dermapens) — it is better to use serums with low-molecular and ultra-low-molecular HA.
For express care — pay attention to fabric masks with a combination of HA forms.
Format is important. Foams and tonics — for cleansing and preparation, serums — for active action, creams — to consolidate the result.
