The evolution of hair removal from Nefertiti to the present day

Thick, shiny, healthy hair is beautiful. But not in the case, when all this beauty blooms on your body. And it's not about modern glossy standards of beauty at all: since ancient times girls have gotten rid of unwanted hair by all available methods.

Until our time the absence of hair on the body was considered a symbol of youth and innocence. In ancient Rome epilation was carried out in special baths: hairs were wound on a strong thread and then pulled out by the root. In ancient Egypt not only women, but also men struggled with body hair. All available methods were used: stones, sharp shells, pumice stone, sugar paste. By the way, if we can trust historians, we should be grateful to the Egyptians for inventing the first razor.

Only the ancient Greeks surpassed the Egyptians: they did not bother with sharpening stones, but simply burned unnecessary hairs with an oil lamp.

    XIII century

The invention of the stripes is attributed to the Turks. During the Ottoman Empire a special room was allocated in the famous Turkish baths, where everyone was helped to get rid of unwanted hair. What mixture was applied to the strips — history is silent.

    XV century

But European ladies did not particularly bother about hair on the body. Yes, without the Queen of England, Elizabeth I, they would have gone hairy. She was a «legislator of fashion» in epilation: at the same time hair was removed not only from the body, but also from the face. According to Elizabeth, all court ladies destroyed eyebrows, and also a small hairs on the face. Later, this trend reached the common people. The hair removal method was simple: you mixed vinegar with lime (probably instead of shaving gel), applied it to your face, and then shaved with a razor.

    XVIII century

In 1760 the French hairdresser Jean-Jacques Perret created the world's first razor for men, which quickly went into women's cosmetic bags. And 100 years ago, Perret's invention was mentioned by the American inventor Camp Gillette — he guessed to make the blades replaceable. Initially, it was also intended for men, but you understand...

    Early 20th century

The real boom came in 1915, when Harper's Bazaar magazine published a photo of a woman with her arm raised and without armpit hair! Razor sales skyrocketed, and all women desperately succumbed to the new trend and immediately began to get rid of hair all over their bodies.

    1930s

There would be no sadness... miniskirts are in fashion, and now you need to remove the hair on the exposed parts of the body. At the same time, the first electric epilator is being tested. To trust the rumors it took 18 hours to remove the hair.

    1940s

The miniskirt fashion made a real revolution in cosmetology. Now the absence of hair on any exposed parts of the body is the norm for any woman, who takes care of herself. At the same time, special preparations for epilation containing enzymes appear. They penetrated the hair follicles, after which the hair fell out easily.

In the USSR, a product called «Nuri» became very popular, which spread the suffocating smell of hydrogen sulfide during application to the skin. It was necessary to wait for this gray mass to dry to a crust, and then wash it off with water together with unwanted hairs. The effect lasted one and a half to two weeks.

    1980s

The days of «hairy hippies» (hairy everywhere) are coming to the end. A new trend has appeared in the world — Brazilian epilation. No compromises: there should be no question of body hair. All methods are used — from a razor to the first electric epilator.

    Nowadays

Wohooo! Now we have freedom of choice! If you want to shave, get the most modern machine and shaving products, created specifically with women's needs in mind. If you prefer a longer hair removal effect, try wax, sugaring or an electric epilator. For those, who want to get rid of unwanted hair forever, laser hair removal will come to the rescue.
